Queensland chases down 399 to beat Tassie

Queensland has chased down a massive 399 target with ease as the Bulls made 3-402 to beat Tasmania by seven wickets at North Sydney Oval.

The Devils started off in brilliant fashion, with Ben Dunk dominant in a record 277-run opening partnership with Tim Paine.

Paine was out for 125 when he was caught by Nathan Reardon off the bowling of Peter George, while Dunk went on to become the first batsman to score a double hundred in domestic one-day cricket.

Dunk carted the bowling to all parts of the ground, crashing 15 fours and 13 sixes in an innings of 229 off just 157 balls.

George Bailey remained not out on 33 off 19 deliveries as the Devils set up what looked like an impossible chase for Queensland.

The Bulls had other ideas, however, as Usman Khawaja and Chris Hartley emulated their Tasmanian rivals with a stunning opening partnership.

They made 280 runs together before Evan Gulbis broke the partnership, bowling Khawaja to end the left-hander’s innings for 166 off 110 balls, including 18 fours and seven sixes.

Hartley and Joe Burns then kept the momentum going, with a 60-run second wicket partnership in quick time before Hartley was run out in the 42nd over when going for a second run.

Hartley departed for 142 off 120 balls, but by then the score was 2-343 and the required rate was down to barely a run a ball.

Reardon was dismissed for 21 through a blinding catch from Gulbis off Andrew Fekete but Burns (48 not out) and Peter Forrest (11 not out) steered the Bulls home with 16 balls remaining.

In the process the Bulls smashed the record score for a side batting second, beating the previous best of 4-352 by Victoria against New South Wales at the same ground in 2012/13.
