South Africa regained some ground but Australia is in a sound position at lunch on day of the Second test.

Resuming at 297-4, with Steve Smith and Shaun Marsh at the crease, Steve Smith notched up his century, continuing on his rich run of form from the Ashes. He was back in the change rooms soon after however, caught by Alviro Petersen off the hardworking McLaren.

Haddin didn’t hang around, trapped in front by Robin Peterson for a duck, the keeper no doubt perplexed at coming to the wicket with his team in a strong position.

Soon after Shaun Marsh’s brilliant innings came to an end, nicking a catch into the slips off Philander.

At lunch the score was 7-374, the Aussies in a strong position but still with some work to do.

Earlier the South Africans received some good news, with beanpole paceman Morne Morkel cleared of any serious shoulder damage.
