Richie Benaud in stable condition after Sydney car accident

Cricket icon Richie Benaud is in a stable condition in Sydney’s Prince of Wales Hospital after being injured in a car accident on Wednesday.

A Channel Nine statement, issued today, said the 83-year-old commentator had suffered chest and shoulder injuries.

“No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself,” Benaud said in a statement.

He is expected to be in hospital for a few days.

“Mr Benaud, who turned 83 earlier this month, was driving home alone to Coogee mid-morning yesterday when the accident happened,” the statement said.

“Police attended and there were no charges. The car had mounted a nature strip and hit a small brick wall.

“Despite being in some discomfort, the former Australian cricket captain and legendary all-rounder remains in fine spirits and good humour.”
