Australian basketball star Liz Cambage is likely to have played her last game for the Opals after declaring she has “zero” interest in representing Australia at next year’s Women’s World Cup in Sydney.

Basketball Australia (BA) will name a preliminary 24-player squad on Monday, with Cambage set to miss out.

On Sunday, Cambage posted an Instagram story featuring an excerpt from a BA email, in which the governing body asked the 30-year-old to confirm whether she wants to be considered for selection.

“We are reaching out to you respectfully to determine whether you want to be considered as a squad member or not for World Cup 2022,” the email said.

“If you are not interested in that journey and the commitment required by all squad members then BA would appreciate you advising us accordingly.”

Cambage posted the excerpt along with her own message: “do you ever get sick of lying on my name? MY interest was and still is ZERO.”

Turbulent past

The star centre was reprimanded by BA last month, after an investigation into a physical and verbal altercation she had with Nigeria players during a warm-up game before the Tokyo Olympics.

An integrity panel found Cambage guilty of one count but cleared her of three other charges.

She escaped a fine or suspension, with the low-grade penalty leaving her available for World Cup selection.

Cambage pulled out of Australia’s Tokyo campaign in the days after the Nigeria practice game due to mental health concerns, revealing she had been having panic attacks about going into the Games bubble.

The world No.2-ranked Opals struggled after Cambage’s late withdrawal, losing their quarter-final in Tokyo.

Cambage completed the WNBA season with the Las Vegas Aces after the Olympics.
