Sprinter Josh Ross facing two-year ban

Australian sprinter Josh Ross is facing a two-year ban for missing three drug tests this year.

Athletics Australia (AA) informed the six-time national 100m champion of the possible sanction after being reported by Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) for missing the controls.

The 32-year-old has already indicated he’ll appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, claiming a misunderstanding with ASADA over his home address in Melbourne.

Under World Anti-Doping Agency rules – of which Athletics Australia is a signatory – three missed drug tests during over an 18-month period is akin to a positive test.

Australia’s Commonwealth Games javelin champion Jarrod Bannister copped a 20-month ban under that same rule in June.

AA was prompted to respond on Thursday after Ross was quoted in media reports addressing the matter.

“Athletics Australia can confirm that sprinter Joshua Ross has been served with an Infraction Notice…referring to an alleged Athlete Whereabouts Violation,” said the statement.

“…the athlete has asked that the matter be heard before the Court of Arbitration for Sport as soon as practicable.

“Athletics Australia agrees that the matter should be heard as expeditiously as possible.”

Ross was a member of the 4x100m relay team that equalled the Australian record when they qualified for the finals at the 2012 London Olympics.

With a personal-best of 10.08sec set in 2007, Ross ranks as the third-fastest Australian of all time behind Matt Shirvington and Patrick Johnson.
