AFL: Kangaroos win big for first-time coach Rhyce Shaw, but Clarkson to stay put

North Melbourne’s interim coach Rhyce Shaw has 13 weeks to impress the Kangaroos board and claim the job for himself – and he didn’t do his chances any harm in game one.

A week after decade-long coach Brad Scott stood aside, former assistant Shaw led the Roos to a 37-point triumph over Richmond with a hard at it crash-tackling style that rattled the Tigers.

After an even first half at Marvel Stadium the Roos got hold of Richmond in the third quarter booting six goals to one and turning a four-point lead into a 33 point gap going into the last. They ran out winners 15 9 (99) to 9 8 (62).

North skipper Jack Ziebell conceded after the game that it had been a tough week for the club.

Last week’s response was awesome and to have Rhyce on board, he’s been great for the group all year,” Ziebell told Channel Seven after the match.

He stood up this week and so have all the boys to be honest. It’s been awesome to see.

North players indicated that Shaw had not made many changes to the game plan, but Ziebell said the young North players would respond to the interim coach.

“The young boys are really easy to lead to be honest,” he said.

“They listen and do whatever the senior players set the example and to lose Brad on the weekend was disappointing and sad, but it’s pretty exciting the way we play footy the last two weeks and Shawy brought fresh ideas.

“[He’s] Awesome. He’s good. He’s very jovial and brings lots of energy. Very different to Brad. But I mean, he’s great in his own right. He’s going to a great job.”

North won the tackle count (68-55) and contested possessions (153-130) with Ben Brown booting five goals, Mason Wood kicking four and Ziebell, Ben Cunnington and Shaun Higgins dominating in the midfield.

North chairman Ben Buckley said after the upheaval of the week Shaw had put his new charges at ease.

“I think Shawy was just himself. He has got a great sense of humour,” Buckley told Channel Seven.

“He told the players to enjoy it, embrace the feeling and the emotion of it all. He was wonderful. He has been great all week.

There was more good news for Shaw – or anyone aspiring to the North job – when Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson made it clear that he had no interest  in the position.

The four-time premiership coach played 93 games for the Roos, but is  contracted at the Hawks until the end of 2022.

“I’m in the third wave of trying to secure some silverware for our footy club,” Clarkson told the media on Friday.

“The first one was obviously 2005 to 2008 and then 2009 to 2012 when we built ourselves to a position to challenge for silverware again.

“We’re in the middle of a phase right now where we’re trying to do that again and I’m very committed to that and my contract status with the club reflects that.

I don’t anticipate I’m going anywhere, and I don’t want to unless the club tap me on the shoulder and said ‘We think it’s time’.

“If that’s the case, then I’ll look elsewhere but that’s not going to be the case.”

The Hawks, ninth with a 5-5 record, will attempt to climb back into the top eight with a win against sixth-placed Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday night.

Mitchell Lewis and Isaac Smith return from injury for the clash, but Clarkson still can’t find room for ex-captain Jarryd Roughead, who didn’t even make the emergency list.

“He’s right in the mix,” Clarkson said of Roughead. “He played well again for Box Hill last week, but this week going to Brisbane it was more about the travel, what Box Hill need and what we need.
