Former AFL footballer Ben Cousins has been admitted to hospital in Perth after being involved in a traffic crash.

Police are remaining tight-lipped about the incident, but the ABC has been told he crashed into a truck on Abernethy Road in High Wycombe about 1:20am on Wednesday.

He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital with minor injuries, where he remains under police guard.

The ABC understands police issued a suppression on information about the crash or any details leading up to the crash.

A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of Cousins on Tuesday after he failed to appear in court on charges of breaching a violence restraining order and possessing methamphetamine.

It is understood the charges involve the 38-year-old’s former partner with whom he has two children, aged three and five.

The court was told Cousins contacted his lawyer yesterday and told him he could not attend court because he was sick.

The Brownlow Medallist and premiership player has struggled with drug addiction for the past decade.

Police are yet to reveal if they were involved in a pursuit with Cousins prior to the crash.
