Gold Coast captain Gary Ablett reportedly requested to be traded back to Geelong – but was knocked back by club officials.

In what would have amounted to a sledgehammer blow to the expansion club, the two-time Brownlow Medallist asked to join the exodus on the Queensland holiday strip, Fairfax Media reported.

The 32-year-old, who joined the club in 2010 from the Cats, reportedly asked permission to re-join Geelong after his wife Jordan expressed her desire to move back to Victoria.

Ablett signed a high-profile $10 million contract to be the Suns’ inaugural skipper before inking a three-year extension last year.

He has two years left on his contract and was reportedly knocked back by Suns officials after informing them of his intentions shortly before the trade period.

While the Cats would have welcomed one of the club’s most famous products back with open arms, the Suns moved quickly to scupper any chance of him moving on.

Ablett is struggling to hold onto the Suns captaincy after being hampered by injury over the last few seasons.

The club lost Dion Prestia (Richmond) and Jaeger O’Meara (Hawthorn) during the trade period and is facing increasing questions about their inability to improve.
