An ex-Geelong AFL player has spent the weekend in hospital after he was seriously injured in an alleged assault in Shepparton.

Paul Brown, 46, fractured his skull and suffered bleeding to the brain as he came to the aid of a young woman about 9.45pm on Friday.

News Limited reported the woman was in a “heated” argument with a man, who allegedly punched Brown after he approached.

Brown fell backwards, hitting his head on the pavement outside a shop on Vaughan Street in the north-central Victorian town.

A 19-year-old Shepparton man was arrested in relation to the attack and was bailed to appear before the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court on January 11.

Brown was initially taken to Goulburn Valley Base Hospital, but was later admitted to The Alfred in Melbourne after his condition worsened.

Last night, he was in a serious but stable condition. The New Daily has contacted the hospital to comment on his current condition.

Former Geelong Cats star Billy Brownless told the Herald Sun he was sickened and concerned by the malicious assault.

“I feel so sad for his wife and his children … he’s such a loving family man and well loved in Shepparton,” Brownless said.

“It’s a huge concern for all of us that such a decent bloke can be king-hit like that.”

Brown played 84 games for Geelong between 1990 and 1998 after he was recruited from Echuca.
