New Saint Jake Carlisle apologises for ‘mistake’

Jake Carlisle – who crossed from Essendon to St Kilda on Wednesday – has apologised for a social media video showing him snorting a white substance.

Just hours after his move to the Saints was confirmed, A Current Affair aired explosive footage of the ex-Bomber defender snorting a substance that was allegedly leaked via social media app Snapchat.

Carlisle responded on Thursday in a statement, in which he did not admit to taking illicit drugs, but that he did acknowledge a serious error of judgment.

“I have made a very poor decision and let people down and for that I am embarrassed and truly sorry,” Carlisle said.

“First, I would like to apologise to all St Kilda members, supporters and staff, AFL fans as well as my new team-mates.

“I am aware of footage being aired of me last night and I want to be upfront and say that I made a mistake.

“The video casts me in a very poor light and reveals clearly inappropriate behaviour which I regret but am accountable for.

“I know that in a few weeks’ time when I join St Kilda, I’m going to be expected to be open and honest with my new club so (I) want to start by confirming my error of judgment right now.

“St Kilda have shown great confidence in me and when I start with them I will need to earn their respect and win back the confidence of the playing group and broader Saints community.

“I will learn from my mistake and when I return to Australia I will commit to any club or AFL requirements or educational programs.

“Again, I apologise for my behaviour and stress than when I join my new club, I will do everything I can to live up to the standards and values they are building at St Kilda.”

The release of the video, allegedly shot in the United States, where Carlisle is on holiday, was unfortunate timing for St Kilda.

But the club said they did not know about the video before they recruited Carlisle.

Just over an hour after Carlisle’s statement, the Saints broke their silence with a statement expressing disappointment and warning the ex-Bomber that he was on notice.

“The St Kilda Football Club is incredibly disappointed in Jake Carlisle and this behaviour is not acceptable,” the statement read.

“Our board, players and staff are united in the direction we are going and we will not allow this progress to be undermined.

“Jake has signed a contract with the St Kilda Football Club but he is aware that he is now on notice and behaviour of this type will not be tolerated.

“Every player on our list has an obligation to live up to our values and to commit themselves to delivering to their best ability, on and off the field.

“But Jake will start at our club next month with an added obligation to prove that he will live within those values in order to fulfil his potential with St Kilda.”
