AFL record in Harvey’s sights after new deal

North Melbourne veteran Brent Harvey could break the VFL-AFL games record next year after signing a new one-year deal at the club.

Harvey inked a contract extension on Thursday, tying him to the Kangaroos until the end of the 2016 season.

The 37-year-old, who celebrated his 400th career game last month, has certainly not slowed, averaging 23.68 disposals a game this season.

He has also chipped in with 16 goals.

Hawthorn legend Michael Tuck’s 426-game record is in danger as a result of Harvey’s fresh contract, with Harvey currently on 403 matches.

He was delighted when speaking to North Melbourne’s official website on Thursday.

“I’m just obviously pretty stoked to have signed for another year,” he said.

“Very, very happy to have put pen to paper and be at the Kangaroos for another season which will be season 21, I think.

“I made it pretty clear that if my body and mind was good, that I wanted to keep going.

“Obviously there was a little bit of talk in the media [about my future], like there is every time this year.

“I had some really good dialogue with Brad. I’ve been sitting down with him for the last five weeks on a Tuesday, going through my game.

“He’s seen that I’m still capable and thinks that I can still contribute to the North Melbourne Football Club.

“That’s the most important thing for me, like I’ve said for probably the last four years.”

During a press conference to announce Harvey’s new deal, forward Drew Petrie walked in unannounced and also confirmed that he had signed a one-year contract extension.

Both should feature as the Kangaroos host ladder-leaders Fremantle at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
