Lewis Jetta war dance caused by Goodes boos

Lewis Jetta mimicked throwing a spear into the Domain Stadium crowd on Sunday because he was angry at the treatment Adam Goodes received.

West Coast thrashed the Swans by 52 points on Sunday, as last season’s grand finalists lost their third match in five.

But Jetta’s indigenous war dance will take the headlines after he threw a make-believe spear into the crowd after kicking a fourth-quarter goal.

A similar dance from Goodes during a match against Carlton in May created enormous controversy and the two-time Brownlow Medallist has been booed throughout matches this season.

It was no different on Sunday and Jetta, annoyed with the boos, displayed his frustration.

Sydney coach John Longmire defended Jetta after the match and said his actions were in support of Goodes.

“He (Jetta) wanted to celebrate the goal and he wanted to stick up for a mate,” he said.

“I think he was upset. Well, I know he was upset. I spoke to him after the game and he was upset at the booing.

“He has had enough of it and he is obviously pretty close to ‘Goodesy’ and he celebrated the goal and that’s how he acted.

“Clearly, Lewis is really close with Adam. They have got a pretty strong relationship, as you would imagine.

“And Lewis is a young kid who has come to Sydney and Goodesy has been such a powerful figure for him and he was reacting and trying to show his support for a mate of his.”

Longmire also said the booing of Goodes in Perth did not shock him.

“It’s happened everywhere,” he said.

Former West Coast player Glen Jakovich slammed Jetta’s conduct, saying his celebration was “unacceptable in any sport”.

Eagles coach Adam Simpson said he was hoping his club’s fans ‘would be better’ than booing Goodes.

“I didn’t know what was going on there,” Simpson said.

“There were a couple of times I heard some booing and thought, ‘What was that?’ I was sort of hoping we would be better than that.

“I’m sure it’s the minority, and for the most part we do respect Adam and who he stands for and what he does.”

Simpson added that he had no issue with Jetta’s celebration.
