Postecoglou, Judd join Blues coaching panel

Socceroos boss Ange Postecoglou and former Carlton star Chris Judd will form part of the Blues’ selection panel in their search for a new coach.

Carlton are on the hunt for a new man to take the reigns after sacking Mick Malthouse last month, with ex-Fitzroy, Brisbane Lions and Hawthorn forward John Barker stepping in on a caretaker basis until the end of the season.

The Blues have won just one of their 10 games this season and sit bottom of the ladder.

In a lengthy letter to Carlton members, CEO Steven Trigg, who praised the work of Barker and his assistants so far, said: “We are preparing to undertake the search for a new coach.

“It will be an exhaustive and thorough process, as we know that is what our members expect.

“We have assembled a group who will be genuinely experienced, informative and helpful in that search (and final assessment).

“Notifying members of this first, the board has established a coaching selection panel. The panel will assess candidates and make recommendations to the board on Carlton’s next senior coach.”

The panel includes Trigg, Postecoglou, recently retired midfielder Judd, ex-Carlton footballer Ken Sheldon and professional recruiter David Campbell.

Trigg continued: “The above group is outstanding. We have captured a blend of perspectives from experienced coaches to a younger perspective fresh from the game.

“The panel has an ‘in football’ emphasis, with an ‘out of football’ perspective – and the expertise we need to make deep, clear assessments of all candidates.

“In terms of timelines, we’re not declaring any particular ‘target date’, preferring to take the approach that ‘it’ll take as long as it takes’ to get the right person.”

Postecoglou, who coached Australia to their 2015 Asian Cup victory, has also won two A-League titles with Brisbane Roar.

He is a keen Carlton supporter and visited the club in February to talk with Malthouse.

Judd, who retired last week after a serious knee injury, played 145 games for Carlton after crossing from West Coast in 2007.

He won three best and fairest awards at the Blues and the 2010 Brownlow Medal.
