The Swans kicked the first two goals of the game, but conceded the next five and were chasing the Dogs for most of the day before going down 11.11 (77) to 10.13 (73) on Saturday afternoon.

The arrival of heavy rain late in the first quarter turned the game into a defensive slog in poor conditions.

Led by captain Robert Murphy, Liam Picken, Marcus Bontempelli and others, the visitors played the Swans on the counter-attack and looked far more dangerous in attack.

They led by 11 points at the half and the margin was still the same at three-quarter time, although the Swans were putting the Dogs under increasing pressure.

A snap from Harry Cunningham at the 14-minute mark of the final term put the Swans in front, but Easton Wood hacked the ball out of the air near the goal-line to give the Dogs a two-point advantage in time-on.

The Bulldogs are now 4-1 after five rounds while the Swans lost their second match on the trot (after last week’s defeat by Fremantle) to be 3-2 for the season.
