Magpies to fight tooth and nail for Beams

Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert says the Magpies will do everything possible to convince Dayne Beams to stay after the star midfielder requested a transfer to one of the Queensland AFL clubs for personal reasons.

Beams, who won Collingwood’s best and fairest award in 2012, has one more year to run on his current contract with the Magpies.

But he has told the club he wants to return to his home state to be closer to his ill father.

Beams has been closely linked to the Brisbane Lions, who already have his younger brother Claye on their list.

“As a contracted player we believe that the conversation we’re having at the moment, which is for Beamsy to remain a Collingwood player and to give him more opportunity during the pre-season and during the season to be home with his family, is a good compromise and in the best interest of everyone,” Pert told Radio SEN on Thursday.

“At this stage we have got to look at what is the ideal scenario and what was put to us yesterday, which we take on board and respect the best solution for all parties.

“We’re talking about a player now that’s in the top 15 to 20 best players in the competition … We can be very considerate and sympathetic to the pressures that he’s feeling at the moment but at the same time he’s an important part of the club.”

Pert said Beams and his manager had told the Magpies he had not entered into any agreement with Brisbane.

“You hear about money being thrown around but we have got to take it at face value and go with what they’re saying to us is what we’re dealing with,” said Pert.

“He’s right at the top of the tree as a talent and we haven’t even talked money.

“It’s not like he’s trading off against two different deals.

“If he doesn’t have a deal from Brisbane or any other club and he hasn’t talked to us about what money would look like moving forward, it can’t be a money thing.

“Without putting a figure on it, you’re always going to have to pay more money to take someone out of a club.

“Now if they’re contracted as well then it’s a whole different thing.”

Were Beams to insist on leaving, Collingwood would be certain to play hard-ball in any trade discussions.

Brisbane hold the No.4 pick in November’s national draft, although Collingwood would likely insist on even better compensation than that for a star player just entering his prime.

Although Beams wants to be traded to Brisbane, Pert said Gold Coast could also come into the equation.

Beams’ disgruntled 2010 premiership teammate Heretier Lumumba is also set to leave Collingwood during the trade period.
