Sydney champion Ryan O’Keefe has officially announced his retirement from AFL.

The veteran confirmed on Wednesday his decision to end his career as a one-club player after 286 games and two premierships with the Swans.

O’Keefe hasn’t played a senior match since round four and was later told his contract would not be renewed for 2015.

The 33-year-old last month remained unsure about whether to continue playing AFL elsewhere, with his decision to be based on the options available.

The 2012 Norm Smith Medallist and 2006 All Australian will be farewelled – alongside teammate Lewis Roberts-Thomson – with a lap of honour before Saturday’s grand final at the MCG.

“It is fitting that two great premiership players of our club will be sent off with a lap of honour at the MCG on grand final day,” Swans coach John Longmire said.

“Both Ryan and Lewis are life members of the Swans and were part of the 2005 and 2012 premiership successes.

“Swans fans have had their chance to thank Ryan and Lewis, and this is another opportunity for all football fans to thank two absolute warriors who always saved their best for September.”
