Sam Newman says he doesn’t need to apologise for flashing his genitals on national television, claiming it was inadvertent and not offensive.

The former Geelong forward exposed himself on Thursday night’s AFL Footy Show during a skit about the meningitis outbreak at Port Adelaide.

The 69-year-old took the show’s stage – which was broadcast live from Adelaide – wearing unbuttoned Port pyjamas.

As he was rolled off a hospital bed by a high-skirted nurse, he bared himself to the crowd and viewers.

Images and videos of Newman spread quickly across social media.

Speaking on radio on Friday, Newman said he was not aware anything “untoward” had happened.

“I’m not apologising,” he told Triple M’s Grill Team.

“I’m don’t know why you would bother apologising.

“I think possibly, inadvertently, people around the globe have seen appendages of various sizes and shapes, I don’t think it’s that offensive but that’s only from my stance.”

The Footy Show star said he did not “get it out” intentionally.

Newman explained that when he changed into the gown, his clothes were taken backstage by the “wardrobe people”, so he could not find his underwear.

His privates have previously featured on The Footy Show at least once, when he was “dacked” by Shane Crawford in 2001.

Newman played 300 games for Geelong from 1964-80.
