GWS player on assault charges after nightclub incident

GWS Giants midfielder Toby Greene has been charged with several assault-based offences following a nightclub incident in Melbourne on Monday night.

Victoria Police laid charges of assault by kicking, assault with a weapon, assault in company, intentionally causing serious injury and unlawful assault on the 20-year-old from the Sydney suburb of Rozelle.

A 19-year-old from Malvern was also charged with similar offences.

The two men have been bailed to appear in Melbourne’s Magistrates Court on September 25.

The Giants said they were aware that Greene had been charged by police in relation to the incident.

“The club is taking the matter very seriously and has no further comment to make at this stage,” GWS said in a statement.

The Giants have the bye this weekend and gave their players leave following their heavy loss to West Coast in Perth on Sunday night.

Greene has played 45 matches for GWS since being selected with pick 11 in the 2011 draft.

He won the Giants’ best first-year player award in their foundation season in 2012.
