Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been recognised for her brilliant season at Chelsea with a nomination for the Professional Footballers Association’s 2020-21 women’s players’ player of the year award.

Kerr, 27, won the Women’s Super League golden boot with 21 goals in 22 games and also recorded seven assists to help Chelsea win the title.

Her season also included a hat-trick in Chelsea’s 6-0 League Cup final win over Bristol City and three goals in the Blues’ journey to the Champions League final.

The PFA women’s players’ player of the year award recognises the best player in English football that season, as voted by the players.

It is one of the biggest honours in English football.

If she is successful, Kerr will be the first Australian to win either the women’s or men’s PFA player of the year award.

Kerr’s teammate and attacking partner, England gun Fran Kirby, was also on the six-player shortlist along with Chelsea goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.

The other nominees were Manchester City trio Sam Mewis, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp.

Three Chelsea players have previously won the women’s award since its inception in the 2012-13 season – Ji So-yun in 2014-15, Kirby in 2017-18 and Bethany England in 2019-20.

The winner of the PFA awards will be announced via a broadcast on the union’s social media channels on Sunday night (UK time).
