Wawrinka wins French Open in massive upset

The world’s number one ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic has been reduced to tears in a massive upset in the final of the French Open.

Victorious opponent Stan Wawrinka admitted he played ‘the match of his life’ to shatter Djokovic’s dream of finally completing his career grand slam in Paris.

Runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2012 and 2014, Djokovic again came up short at the clay tournament in a 4-6 6-4 6-3 6-4 defeat.

“Obviously (it) was not easy to stand there as a runner-up again, but I lost to a better player who played some courageous tennis and deserved to win,” Djokovic told the crowd in a post-match interview.

“This is something that definitely gives me even more motivation to come back and keep on trying.”

Wawrinka, 30, left his Serbian opponent stunned with the defeat.

“It was an incredible atmosphere on court and I felt emotion like I never have before,” Wawrinka told bbc.com.

“I would like to thank my coach Magnus Norman. You played in the final without winning but this victory is yours as well as mine.”

The top seed had been unbeaten on clay in 2015 and entered the final on a 27-match winning streak after sweeping to five titles, including an open-era record fifth Australian Open crown in January.

But he offered no excuses in defeat.

“I’m proud of the fight that I put into this match. I tried my best. It wasn’t to be,” Djokovic said.

There was no hiding his disappointment, though, with the loser admitting this defeat cut deep. As the French crowd gave him a rousing two-minute standing ovation, the Serb cried.

Rafael Nadal remains the undisputed king of clay, but he was not at full fitness this year and was bundled out by Djokovic in the quarters.

Between 2001 and 2014, Nadal won the French Open nine times.
