Summer is well and truly here, and the hot and dry conditions can lead to unwanted rising power bills.

If your New Year’s resolution was to get in control of your power costs and save money, we’ve got some tips for you.

1. Smarter air-conditioning

Air-conditioning is usually the biggest drain on summer power bills. And while cutting cooling costs delivers big savings, it’s easier said than done on a scorcher of a day. So rather than turning it off all together, try reducing your air-con usage by just a few hours per day.

You can also avoid setting the temperature too low, to reduce costs. Depending on where you live in Australia, the ideal air-con temperature should be set to around 25 degrees for cooling in summer for maximum energy efficiency.

2. Compare Plans

If you’ve never compared, or it has been more than a year since you did, there’s a very good chance that switching retailers to Powershop could save you money this summer.

Here’s how to do it

1. Visit Powershop.com.au

2. Enter your postcode or upload a current electricity bill

The comparison will show if you are better off with Powershop, plus all The New Daily readers will receive an additional $100 power discount when they become a Powershop customer by following the steps above. Who doesn’t love bonus discounts?

Alternatively, if you leave your details via Powershop.com.au, you’ll be put in touch with one of Powershop’s award-winning staff, who can organise everything over the phone.

3. Close the window

If your first thought was to open up the house for some ventilation, first check the outside air temperature. When it is getting hot outside, your best bet is to use a fan to circulate the air, and close windows and doors to avoid the sun shining through.

Once the outside temperature is lower than inside, opening the windows and doors is a good idea.

4. Track your usage

The Powershop mobile app and online usage tools allow you to track data on a half-hourly, daily and monthly basis.

This functionality can help you stay on top of your usage, keep you in the know during those hot days and isolate what power-hungry devices are gobbling up your power.
