Joe Biden jokes about age, Taylor Swift conspiracy in rare media appearance

United States President Joe Biden has made a rare appearance on late-night television, using the interview to defend concerns over his age.

Biden, 81, pointed to his likely opponent in the US election Donald Trump when asked by Seth Meyers on Late Night With Seth Meyers about voter concerns over his age.

“Take a look at the other guy, he’s about as old as I am,” said Biden, who is less than four years older than 77-year-old Trump.

“It’s about how old your ideas are. Look, I mean, this is a guy who wants to take us back,” Mr Biden continued. “He wants to take us back on Roe v Wade. He wants to take us back on a whole range of issues that are – 50, 60 years, they’ve been solid American positions.”

Biden also jibed that Trump “can’t remember his wife’s name”.

Trump has been caught out spelling his wife Melania’s name incorrectly before and in a recent speech at the conservative CPAC convention, he appeared to call her “Mercedes”.

“Oh, look at that Mercedes, that’s pretty good,” he said as the audience applauded.

Trump’s allies defended him saying the property tycoon was likely referring to Mercedes Schlapp, the wife of CPAC organiser Matt Schlapp.

Myers also asked Biden about voter concern that Taylor Swift is part of a secret government plot to help him win the election. The wild conspiracy theory has taken hold in recent weeks.

“Can you confirm or deny that there is an active conspiracy between you and Ms Swift?” Meyers asked.

“Where are you getting this information? It’s classified,” Mr Biden replied with a smile, adding: “But I will tell you, she did endorse me in 2020.”

Biden was also pressed by Meyers on calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

“There is a path forward, with difficulty,” the President said.

“First of all, there are — the hostages being held must be released,” Biden said, adding that “there’s been an agreement by the Israelis that they would not engage in activities during Ramadan, as well, in order to give us time to get all the hostages out.

“I think if we get that — that temporary cease-fire, we’re going to be able to move in a direction where we can change the dynamic and not have a two-state solution immediately, but a process to get to a two-state solution,” Biden said.

The President then got an ice cream with the late night host after the show, and answered more questions on the war.
