American right-wing firebrand Tucker Carlson has announced he will soon interview Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging his countrymen to tune in and learn about the motives behind Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Carlson, in a post from Moscow on X, formerly known as Twitter, gave no further details on when the interview would take place.

The former Fox News host said the interview was to enable Americans to know “as much as you can” on Russia’s view of the nearly two-year-old conflict with Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on whether there was a forthcoming interview or if Carlson had visited the Russian presidential administration.

Carlson described the war in Ukraine as a “human disaster” that altered longstanding political and trade realties throughout the world and there had been wide exposure to the views expressed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“Most Americans have no idea why Putin invaded Ukraine or what his goals are now,” he said.

“We are not here because we love Vladimir Putin….We are not encouraging you to agree with what Putin may say in this interview, but we are urging you to watch it. You should know as much as you can.”

Carlson said he had also requested an interview with Zelensky.

Carlson’s trip has been lauded by some American conservatives.

“Democrats and their propagandists in the media are spasming at the prospect of Tucker Carlson interviewing Putin,” outspoken Georgia Republican Congressional Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene posted on social media.

“We have a free press in this country, and it is people like Tucker Carlson, who we depend on to speak the truth!”

Carlson was sacked from Fox News in April 2023 after a defamation case brought by Dominion Voting Systems, which accused the network of airing false claims after the 2020 election.

He had a record viewership at Fox.

He then moved his show to X, garnering hundreds of millions of views.

Fox has challenged the legal validity of his new shows for a breach of contract.

Carlson said Elon Musk, who owns X, had “promised not to suppress or block” his interview with Putin when he broadcasts it on the platform.
