US President Donald Trump has accepted a new invitation to deliver his State of the Union address on February 5.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the new invitation today, after earlier barring Mr Trump from speaking on the original date of January 29 because of the US government shutdown.

In her invitation, Ms Pelosi said she and Mr Trump spoke on Monday and agreed on the new date.

“When I wrote to you on January 23rd, I stated that we should work together to find a mutually agreeable date when government has reopened to schedule this year’s State of the Union address,” Ms Pelosi wrote in a letter.

“In our conversation, we agreed on February 5.”

In a reply, Mr Trump said it was his “great honour to accept”.

“We have a great story to tell and yet, great goals to achieve,” Mr Trump wrote in a letter.

The House and Senate still must pass a resolution officially inviting Mr Trump to speak to a joint session of Congress.

Mr Trump was originally scheduled to make the address on January 29, but Ms Pelosi refused to allow the speech to happen in the House of Representatives while the US government was in the midst of its longest-ever shutdown.

Mr Trump had called Ms Pelosi’s decision to postpone the speech a “disgrace” and a “great blotch on the country we all love” and suggested he would deliver the speech at an “alternative” venue.

Hours later, Mr Trump tweeted he would deliver the address when the shutdown was over “because there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber”.

The State of the Union is an annual message the president delivers to Congress, but also more broadly to the American public, and is one of the responsibilities Mr Trump must fulfil under the US constitution.
