Donald Trump insists the abuse allegations against his Supreme Court pick, Brett Kavanaugh, are “all false to me”.

But – in a combative mood during a rare solo media conference – the US President has admitted his view of sexual misconduct claims is coloured by the litany of charges that women have lobbed against him for decades.

All, he said, were false.

“I was accused by four or five women who got paid a lot of money to make up stories about me,” he said during his 80-minute appearance before the media.

“They’re fake news.”

It was only the second solo media conference Mr Trump has held on US soil in his two years as President.

During it, he also conceded he might change his mind about Mr Kavanaugh after watching the blockbuster hearing set for Thursday (US time), when one of the Supreme Court nominee’s accusers will detail her claims before the Senate Judiciary Committee and a national television audience.

“I can be persuaded also,” Mr Trump said. “I can’t tell you if they’re liars until I hear them.”

Mr Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual misconduct by three women, putting his nomination for the US Supreme Court at risk.

He and his first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, will give evidence publicly overnight on Thursday (AEST) before the judiciary committee.

“I’m going to see what happens tomorrow. I’m going to be watching,” Mr Trump said. “I’m going to see what’s said. It’s possible they will be convincing.”

Mr Trump said his political opponents, the Democrats, were “con artists”.

“They’ve destroyed a man’s reputation, and they want to destroy it even more,” he said.

“They go in to a room, and I guarantee you, they laugh like hell on what they pulled off on you and on the public.”

He went on to describe Mr Kavanaugh as “one of the highest quality people that I’ve ever met”.

“When I look at what’s happened to the reputation of a great gentleman — a great intellect, a brilliant man, somebody that has a chance to be one of our great Supreme Court justices in history — intellectually, I think it’s a shame,” he said.

In evidence for the hearing, Mr Kavanaugh acknowledges drinking in high school with his friends, but says he has never done anything “remotely resembling” the sexual misconduct alleged by his chief accuser. He denies having a “sexual or physical encounter of any kind” with Ms Ford.

The judiciary committee is also reviewing new claims against Mr Kavanaugh.

According to a document posted on Twitter by lawyer Michael Avenatti, a woman, Julie Swetnick, alleges she witnessed Mr Kavanaugh “consistently engage in excessive drinking and inappropriate contact of a sexual nature with women in the early 1980s”.

Ms Swetnick also made other accusations in her statement, which Mr Avenatti posted on Wednesday.

In a sworn statement submitted to the committee, Ms Swetnick said that Mr Kavanaugh and his friend Mark Judge were present at a party where she was drugged and “gang raped”.

In an interview with Fox News on Monday, the Supreme Court nominee said he never sexually assaulted anyone and was a virgin through high school and for “many years after.”

Mr Avenatti also represents Stormy Daniels, an adult film actress who alleges she was paid to keep quiet about a sexual relationship with Mr Trump.

Mr Kavanaugh has strongly denied the latest accusations.

“This is ridiculous and from The Twilight Zone. I don’t know who this is and this never happened,” he said.

Mr Judge’s lawyer, Barbara Van Gelder, issued a statement saying her client also vehemently denied Ms Swetnick’s allegations.

The judge is also accused by Deborah Ramirez of exposing himself to her at a Yale University party 35 years ago.
