How the world celebrated New Year’s Eve

With 2016 being a tough year for so many people, it wasn’t surprising to see the arrival of 2017 celebrated with such gusto.

New Zealand was among the first countries to celebrate the new year’s arrival, followed shortly by the traditionally grandiose Sydney fireworks display centred around the Harbour Bridge.

Some of the tallest buildings in the world – the Taipei 101 and the Burj Khalifa – played host to pyrotechnics that could be seen for miles, while Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza and France’s Arc de Triomphe featured in more understated shows.

New York managed to carry on after an underwhelming performance by Mariah Carey, with the traditional dropping of an illuminated ball capping off the year for the city that never sleeps.
