President-elect Donald Trump is claiming he has won the United States-election popular vote, despite latest results reporting Hillary Clinton was leading that count by two million ballots.

Mr Trump said he had done so by claiming he led the count after deducting the “millions of people who voted illegally”.

The billionaire sensationally revealed this belief in a series of tweets on Monday morning (AEDT), days after a vote recount in Wisconsin was confirmed.

The White House has dismissed his claims, saying there has been no evidence of widespread election fraud.

The US election is not decided by the popular vote count. It is handed to the candidate that is able to secure a majority of US Electoral College votes, with each state being allocated a differing amount of these votes based on their population.

Mr Trump did not reveal why he thought “millions of people voted illegally”.

In the lead-up to the election, he made numerous claims that the election was “rigged” to favour his Democratic Party rival, Ms Clinton.

Politco reported earlier in November that Ms Clinton’s popular vote lead over Mr Trump had extended to beyond the two million vote mark.

Mr Trump’s tweets came as Green Party candidate for the US Presidency Jill Stein confirmed she has requested a recount of votes in Wisconsin over fears of misconduct to do with polls in the state.

Ms Stein is also pushing for a recount in Michigan. Mr Trump narrowly won both states.

Ms Clinton’s campaign has backed the Wisconsin recount, however its representatives have not given much detail on their motives for doing so.

“Because we had not uncovered any actionable evidence of hacking or outside attempts to alter the voting technology, we had not planned to exercise this option ourselves,” Ms Clinton’s campaign lawyer Marc Elias wrote in a post on blogging platform, Medium, about the decision, “but now that a recount has been initiated in Wisconsin, we intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides”.

Mr Trump continues to work on his administration’s transition to the White House.
