California traffic jam ‘nightmare’ captured in aerial footage

Traffic chaos in west LA.

If you’re dreading peak hour traffic as you journey home this afternoon, take heart that you’re not stuck in a “horrible traffic nightmare” in southern California.

Incredible aerial footage has shown kilometres of gridlocked traffic in the Los Angeles area on the 405 motorway, one of the busiest routes in the United States.

The footage was captured as tens of millions of Americans embarked on Thanksgiving holiday travel.

It was shared on social media by ABC7 and has since notched up more than 14 million views.

“It’s called the 405 for a reason: It takes you ‘4 o’ 5′ hours to get anywhere,” wrote Dennis John Depew, while others joked the “horrible traffic nightmare” was the freeway version of the mannequin challenge.

It’s not the first time a massive traffic jam has made the headlines.

Earlier this year 12 people died during a massive three-day traffic jam in Indonesia that stretched more than 20 kilometres and brought thousands of holidaymakers to a complete standstill.

Last year thousands of cars were left stranded in a 50-lane traffic jam in China that was dubbed “Carmageddon”.
