At least one person has been shot dead at Will Rogers Airport in Oklahoma, United States, local police have confirmed.

The Oklahoma City Police Department tweeted to urge locals to “avoid” the airport and to wait for more updates.

Southwest Airlines later confirmed the deceased was one of its employees.

“The Southwest Airlines Family is deeply saddened by the passing of our Southwest Family Member, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies and support to his family and Southwest coworkers at this time,” a statement read.

The victim is Michael Winchester, believed to be 51, the Oklahoma City Police Department tweeted.

Shots were fired in a parking lot, OKC Police officer Captain Paco Balderrama told reporters at the scene.

“At this point in time, we located one victim and we’re looking for a second reported victim,” he said.

“We don’t have any information to put out on the suspect vehicle or the suspect itself, but gunshots were heard.”

Police confirmed around 9am (AEDT) that one of the victims had died from their injuries.

Police were still unable to say how many suspects were being sought.

All flights from the airport have been grounded.
