Bali police officer Wayan Sudarsa died of blunt force trauma to the head after being hit with binoculars, a mobile phone and a beer bottle during a violent struggle on Kuta Beach.

As prosecutors outlined their case on Wednesday, they were unequivocal.

It was because of what Australian woman Sara Connor and her British boyfriend David Taylor did that Mr Sudarsa was dead.

But after hearing the case against her, Connor was equally explicit telling the court: “I’m innocent”.

Her lawyer Erwin Siregar said they would be challenging the indictment, adding it was not “accurate, clear or complete”.

Instead of facing the charges of murder, fatal assault in company and assault causing death, Mr Siregar says Connor should be facing the charge of eliminating evidence.

The 45-year-old mother from Byron Bay was handcuffed to Taylor as they were led into the holding cells at Denpasar District Court in preparation for the first day of their trials.

Taylor, whose hearing was heard first, occasionally shook his head as prosecutors told how on the night of August 16, he and Connor had gone down to Kuta Beach at around 10pm and were hugging on the sand and drinking beer when they realised her purse had gone missing.

Connor was ”screaming in fright” and “hysterical” after the fight.

Taylor, prosecutors said, confronted Mr Sudarsa whom he had seen at the beach minutes before and began searching his pockets and demanding, “Where is the bag?”

A violent struggle ensued in which Taylor was sometimes on top of Mr Sudarsa and vice versa.

At various times throughout the fight, Taylor allegedly struck Mr Sudarsa with binoculars and a mobile phone.

Connor, meanwhile, had her hair pulled and was bitten twice by the police officer when she tried to intervene, prosecutors said.

“Connor was screaming in fright,” the court heard, and was “hysterical” as she continued the search for her bag.

As it escalated Mr Sudarsa choked Taylor, before the British man allegedly grabbed a bottle and smashed it on the police officer striking him three times.

After the final blow Mr Sudarsa was motionless. Taylor allegedly searched his body and took the police officer’s wallet.

David Taylor

Connor’s British boyfriend David Taylor, 34, will face a separate trial.

When Taylor and Connor returned to their homestay nearby, the Australian mother allegedly cut up the police officer’s ID cards.

On the day of their arrest on August 19, the pair allegedly burnt their clothes and dumped Mr Sudarsa’s belongings.

Unlike Connor, Taylor will not be formally challenging the indictment but will instead fight some of the allegations throughout a separate trial in the same court house.

A panel of three judges will preside over the trial that is expected to last months, with the defendants appearing before the court one or two days per week.

The judges granted Connor’s lawyers one week to prepare an objection against the indictment, in which they will argue the trial should not proceed.

Both defendants will return to court next week.
