The result of the US Presidential election is upon us and one thing is certain; this year has been punctuated by some of the dirtiest, most personal attacks ever seen in a presidential campaign.

The vitriol was not only confined to the debates, either, but permeated its way into social media, television, in merchandise, memes and a swathe of pop culture.

Usually the most memorable strikes against presidential candidates are levelled at them by political pundits and late-night TV hosts. But these became a breath of fresh air this year as entire parties and social groups turned on themselves and each other online and in person.

The hyperbole has even affected Americans’ ability to engage with its own political system.

One teacher commented in an interview with the Washington Post that “This is the first time I’ve really said to myself, ‘I can’t cover this election like I want to because it’s not school-appropriate’.”

Trump lampooned by his detractors.

The threat of violence and armed uprisings have constantly hung overhead, and debate has fallen away in favour of trying to inspire rage in political detractors.
