Three people are dead and 12 wounded following a gun battle at a restaurant in Los Angeles.

It’s believed the carnage was sparked when an argument broke out at a birthday party in the restaurant in the historic West Adams district.

Police, who found shell casings and blood throughout the non-permit restaurant, are reportedly questioning two suspects.

“It’s a bloody scene with shell casings everywhere,” LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado told the Los Angeles Times.

There were about 50 people celebrating a birthday inside the restaurant, a Jamaican eatery, when an argument broke out, Preciado said.

Los Angeles Police Department Officer Mike Lopez said two of the wounded have been released while the others remain hospitalised but the wounds are not considered life-threatening.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is calling the shooting “senseless gun violence”.
