Vatican denies Pope has become an actor

The Vatican has attempted to quell rumours the Pope will soon be making his cinematic debut.

Los Angeles-based film studio AMBI Pictures announced it was producing the Papal’s first film, releasing a press release with the headline: “Film Will Mark First Ever Big Screen Participation Role for the Leader of the Worldwide Catholic Church.”

Titled Beyond the Sun, the film is touted as a religious family adventure based on the gospels.

But according to the Vatican, the leader has not been sharpening his acting chops and any scenes featuring the 79-year old will use already-filmed footage of the Pope in real life.

Speaking on local Vatican Radio this week, Pope Francis’ head of communications Monsignor Dario Vigano said there was a possibility the studio had collected footage and the Pope would be “playing himself”.

“The Pope is not an actor,” he emphasised.

However, the film’s creators Andrea Lervolino and Lady Monika Bacardi are keen to push the image of the Pope with his own acting trailer.

“It is a great honor for Andrea and I to have the opportunity to work with His Holiness, Pope Francis, to spread the awareness of his message, through this film,” Bacardi told Variety.

“Our excitement and gratitude toward His Holiness, Pope Francis participating in this film is beyond words,”

According to Variety, the film was made at request of the Pope himself and all profits will be donated to Argentinean charities El Alemendro and Los Hogares de Cristo, helping at-risk children and young adults.
