An elderly man has reportedly killed his wife and drowned himself with a concrete block containing her severed head.

Police claimed the husband, 72, strangled his wife, 71, to death before dismembering her.

The man’s corpse was found by police divers in the Austrian lake of Traunsee on Tuesday (AEDT), which is approximately 100 kilometres from the Austrian-German border. The man is believed to be a German citizen.

“We believe first and foremost that [the man’s death] was suicide,” Austrian prosecutor Birgit Ahamer told a press conference, according to the BBC.

The concrete block containing the female head was in a bag attached to one of the man’s hands, police said. Another weighted bag was reportedly attached to his other hand.

More of the woman’s remains were reportedly found floating in two suitcases close to the lake’s shore a day earlier, prompting police to send divers into the water.

Postmortem examinations suggested the woman was strangled between 25 December and 1 January and that the man drowned some time later, police said.

The husband and wife have not been named.
