A teenage girl wounded after an anti-homosexual ultra-orthodox Jewish man stabbed her and several others in a Jerusalem gay pride march has died, according to a hospital official.

Shira Banki, 16, passed away from her wounds on Sunday, Hadassah Medical Centre said. Her organs will be donated.

Ms Banki was one of six people wounded on Thursday by the man, Yishai Schlissel, who performed a similar attack at a gay pride parade in 2005, said Mashable.

Schlissel was released from prison three weeks before the ultimately fatal attack after serving time for his 2005 actions.

He reportedly spoke out against the parade after his release.

The parade was happening as planned when Schissel attacked.

About 100,000 people marched through nearby Tel Aviv and in Jerusalem to party music and the colour of gay pride flags.

Jerusalem is renowned for being a highly religious city with many orthodox and observant members of the Arab, Jewish and Christian faith calling it home.

While these communities frown on homosexuality, violent attacks on gays are rare, although threats and opposition are not.

“Shira was murdered because she courageously supported the idea that everyone is entitled to live their lives in dignity and safety,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a message of condolence on Sunday.

“We are determined to fight aggressively against the phenomena of hatred, fanaticism and terrorism by any side,” he earlier told his cabinet in Jerusalem.

“Over the last days, we witnessed despicable crimes,” he said, promising to bring their perpetrators to justice.

“Our policy towards such crimes is zero tolerance.”
