In the year since it declared itself a “caliphate”, more than 3000 people in Syria, including over 1500 civilians, have died at the hands of Islamic State.

A British-based group monitoring the conflict in Syria said it counted 3027 ISIS executions since June in 2014.

Among the dead were 1787 civilians, including 74 children, the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights said.

People from the Sunni Shaitat tribe account for almost half the civilians murdered while ISIS also killed 930 of the Deir Ezzor tribe.

The monitor says the toll includes 223 executions from this week in the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobane. ISIS re-entered the town this week after being expelled in January.

ISIS has also executed 143 of its own members accused of trying to flee the group and spying.

Around 8000 ISIS militants have perished in fighting and American air strikes. Isis rose to notoriety in Syria in 2013 when they spawned from an Iraqi al-Qaeda affiliate.

They wanted to merge with al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate Al-Nursa front but then they refused the groups became bitter rivals.

ISIS has declared its “caliphate” across Syrian and Iraqi territory, installing its leader Abu Bakr al Baghdadi as “Caliph Ibrahim”.
