‘Pro-rape’ beer removed after backlash

The maker of world-famous beer Bud Light have been forced to apologise for a marketing slogan perceived as anti-consent.

On Tuesday, photos of a beer bottle with the slogan “the perfect beer for removing ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night” was widely criticised on social media.

The phrase was reportedly one of hundreds used as part of the company’s ‘Up for Whatever’ campaign.

“We would never condone disrespectful or irresponsible behaviour,” said Bud Light vice president Alexander Lambrecht in a statement.

“As a result, we have immediately ceased production of this message on all bottles.”

Social media users alleged the product’s message promoted rape.

In Australia, the criminal law protects those who seek explicit verbal consent before proceeding with sexual contact.

Those who attempt sexual contact with someone who is asleep, unconscious or who has said ‘no’ risk lengthy prison sentences.
