Police pull over American driver ‘in a tank’

Increasingly militarised US police have been filmed pulling over a citizen in a ‘tank’ while dressed in army fatigues.

In a video posted online, Lucas Jewell of Florida is heard to ask incredulously “I’m really getting pulled over by a tank right now?”.

The militarised police, driving an armoured vehicle, were unhappy at being ‘flipped off’.

The three officers denied the vehicle was a tank, describing it instead as an “armoured personnel carrier”.

The vehicle appears to be a Lanco BearCat, a four-wheel, 12-passenger bullet-proof ‘truck’ designed for use by both the military and law enforcement.

Local police in the US are increasingly being equipped as soldiers, human rights activists have warned.

By 2005, the Pentagon had provided surplus military gear to 17,000 law enforcement agencies, civil libertarian Radly Balko told The Economist.

Mr Balko has written extensively on the issue in his book ‘Rise of the Warrior Cop’.

The driver was accused of making a rude hand gesture at the police, and receiving fellatio from his female passenger.

He denied the oral sex accusation.

The video of the incident was first posted on website Truth Voice.
