List ranks world’s most miserable countries

According to Professor Steve H Hanke from The Johns Hopkins University in the US, Syria is the world’s most miserable country.

The study ranks Syrians ahead of war-torn nations Sudan and Serbia in their rate of sadness, due to their high rate of inflation.

Professer Hanke, who specialises in applied economics, ranked 109 countries on his 2013 “World Misery Index” based on three simple economic factors: consumer prices, interest rates and unemployment.

The list does not account for conflict, poverty or starvation rates.

Based on these figures, Syria tops the list followed by Venezuela and Sudan.

Australia placed 75th on the list, with Professor Hanke citing “high interest rates” as the largest contributing factor to our unhappiness.

Australia was more “miserable” than several Asian countries, with South Korea, Taiwan, China and Japan securing the 105th, 106th 107th and 108th places respectively.

Switzerland was the least miserable country of those listed, taking the 109th position on the list.

Countries not featured on the list, including North Korea, were omitted because of a lack of data.
