A 5.4-magnitude earthquake has rattled southeastern Mexico, but no damage or injuries were immediately reported.

The quake was centred in the state of Veracruz, 47 kilometres southeast of Sayula de Aleman, and hit at 2.16pm on Saturday (0516 AEST Sunday), the US Geological Survey said.

The USGS said the quake was 145 kilometres deep.

National Civil Protection co-ordinator Luis Felipe Puente said no damage was seen when authorities checked the region.
