The family of a hostage freed after a 12-hour siege ordeal in the Western Australian town of Bunbury have thanked authorities for their work.

David Charles Batty took a man hostage at a local laundromat on Thursday night, sparking a 12-hour stand off with police in a Bunbury park.

Batty was arrested after being shot with beanbag rounds Friday morning.

The family of the hostage have issued a statement through WA Police extending “enormous gratitude” to emergency services on the scene.

“The comprehensive level of support at the scene and the mobilisation of specialist services from Perth ensured the safe return of our beloved Peter,” the statement said.

“In particular we want to recognise the patience and skill of the negotiator, the protection afforded by the Tactical Response Group and Major Crime Squad, and the care shown by the ambulance officers and staff at Bunbury Hospital.

“Special thanks to our local Bunbury police who co-ordinated these services and treated the family with great care and sensitivity throughout this ordeal.

“With Peter safely back in our arms, we’ll now focus on his recovery and moving forward.”

Batty is due in court later this month.
