Fierce bushfire rages in Perth’s south

Residents of Aubin Grove in Perth’s southern suburbs are being told it is safe to flee the area as a fast-moving bushfire bears down.

The blaze has burnt through about 300 hectares in neighbouring Banjup and Forrestdale, where an emergency warning is in place, with residents there warned it is too late to leave.

Flames are towering above the bushland canopy and the air is thick with black smoke.

The alert applies to an area bounded by Armadale Road, Tapper Road, Beenyup Road, Rowley Road and Taylor Road.

An emergency warning has also been issued for Gibbs Road, Beenyup Road, Rowley Road and Lyon Road in Aubin Grove, but people in this area can leave for a safer place if the way is clear.

About 200 firefighters are battling the blaze.

A temporary evacuation centre has been set up at Armadale Arena on the corner of Townley Street and Forrest Road in Armadale.

The cause of the fire, which is being fanned by strong winds, is unknown.

A watch and act alert remains in place for people from Tapper Road west to the Kwinana Freeway in the suburb of Atwell, which is north of Aubin Grove.
