Liberal MP wants more protection for landowners

A State Liberal MP has attacked his government’s lack of commitment to protect the property rights of landowners.

Former minister Murray Cowper says new infrastructure projects and some pieces of legislation are increasingly resulting in property being taken from landowners or diminished in value.

He says worried landowners are not being adequately compensated by the government.

The Murray-Wellington MP says the issue of property rights has again been listed for discussion at this year’s Liberal State Conference and this time he wants to see a strong commitment to the issue.

“It’s an issue right across Western Australia but it seems to be mostly acute in those peri-urban electorates, Wanneroo, Moore, in Darling Range, certainly in Murray-Wellington and in the South West,” he said.

“It’s an issue that’s been around for many years and as the state grows so do these issues.”
