A body has been found in a suburban Melbourne park.

Victoria Police were called to St Kilda Botanical Gardens about 6.40am on Tuesday following the discovery of the body, believed to be that of a young woman.

The circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be determined and the police investigation is ongoing.

The gardens remained closed to the public on Tuesday afternoon.
