Victorian households will receive a $250 payment if they seek out a better energy deal.

The Victorian government made the $250 million commitment on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s state budget.

From July 1, the bonus will be open to all Victorian households who compare their energy deal through the Victorian Energy Compare website.

Victorian Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said Victorians could save $330 on energy bills in the first year if they switch to a better provider.

The $250 payment will be open to households until June 30, 2023.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the scheme would not allow people from the same household to double dip the bonus as the home’s energy meter was used to apply.

Victorians who moved houses would be able to apply for the payment again.

“‪In very practical terms, this is real action to deal with cost of living pressures, it’s what’s right,” Mr Andrews said on Monday.

“We think there will be many, many hundreds of thousands of Victorian household to apply for this $250 payment from July 1.”
