A bus driver has died and at least nine passengers have been injured in a highway collision near Horsham in Victoria’s west on Thursday morning.

The bus was carrying about 40 passengers along the Western Highway near Pimpinio when the trailers of a B-double truck in front of it detached and blocked the highway in both directions about 2am.

The bus crashed into the trailers, critically injuring the bus driver who was treated by emergency crews but died at the scene.

A man in his 40s was treated for leg injuries and flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition, Ambulance Victoria said.

A woman in her 60s was flown to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition with arm injuries.

Paramedics said another seven people, ranging in age from their teens to their 70s, were treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital in Horsham.

More than 30 other passengers who were on the bus when it crashed were taken to Horsham for medical assessments, Ambulance Victoria said.

The highway was closed in both directions while detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit examined the scene.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dash cam footage has been urged to contact police.
