A man and a woman have been stabbed near Melbourne’s Flinders Street train station this morning, leaving one fighting for life.

Police said there was a fight between two groups of people on the corner of Flinders and Elizabeth streets at about 4.30am.

“It is believed an altercation took place between two groups which resulted in a man and a woman being assaulted with an edged weapon near the intersection of Flinders Street,” Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said in a statement.

The man, in his 30s, has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries to his upper body.

The woman, who is also in her 30s, is at the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition after suffering serious injuries also to her upper body.

Police said four people were in custody assisting police with their inquiries.

Elizabeth Street, between Flinders street and Flinders Lane, is closed off as police investigate.
