Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog is reviewing police handling of a traffic accident involving the wife of Premier Daniel Andrews.

Catherine Andrews was driving on Ridley Street, in Blairgowrie, on the Mornington Peninsula in January 2013 when she was involved in a collision with a teenage cyclist, leaving him seriously injured.

The boy sustained upper body injuries and was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

Two police officers attended the crash, but failed to conduct a breath test on Ms Andrews.

No-one was charged following a police investigation of the accident, but Victoria Police’s own standards authority investigated its officers’ failure to conduct a breath test.

“Professional Standards Command concluded their investigation into the circumstances around two members failing to follow Victoria Police policy after a collision,” a police spokesman said.

“The two attending members failed to conduct a PBT on the driver of the vehicle involved in the collision.

“Both members were administered Workplace Guidance and the matter has been finalised.”

However, the police spokesman confirmed the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC) was now reviewing police handling of the incident.

IBAC has declined to comment, other than to say it “will consider the handling of this particular matter”.

Mr Andrews was Opposition Leader at the time.

There is no suggestion that there was any wrongdoing on the part of Ms Andrews.
