Victoria’s high number of motorcyclist deaths has risen again after a rider was killed near the entry to Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway.

The man is the 49th rider to die on Victorian roads this year, only 11 fewer than the 2014 and 2015 totals combined.

He was struck by a car as he turned right from Springvale Road onto the freeway on-ramp in Nunawading about 6.30am on Friday, police say.

He suffered serious head and leg injuries and died at the scene.

The four-wheel drive that he collided with had severe damage on its front.

Its driver was arrested and is assisting police with their enquiries.

Lanes around the scene have been closed.

“When you see someone on the road receiving CPR and then realise they ride the exact same bike you do … that hits home.”

Victoria’s provisional road toll for this year stands at 267, which is 34 more than the same time last year.
