Two men wearing masks have shot and assaulted a man in Melbourne’s inner north in what police believe was a targeted attack.

Police said the 26-year-old-man was shot in the leg after two “masked offenders” entered his house in Wales Street, Brunswick West, about 3:45am.

Detective Senior Constable John Elliott said the offenders demanded cash and escaped on foot.

“We believe it was a targeted attack, but we’re still making those enquiries,” he said.

“We know they have entered the house, they’ve attacked the people within the house and made demands before then fleeing.”

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Four other people were in the house at the time but they were not hurt.

“Everyone is distressed by the incident as you can well understand,” Detective Senior Constable Elliott said.

Detective Senior Constable Elliott said it was unclear whether the offenders knew the victim.

Police urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
